Stoneware and Cast-Metal Vases/Jars

Developing his interest in obscure crafts techniques, Simon Hasan explores how a crafts technique can be applied to a family of objects suitable for volume production.

Stoneware beer flagons are an extinct part of our rural and urban past. These vases echo the language of the flagon, and feature a slip-cast stoneware lower half produced in the Stoke-on-Trent suburb of Longton, and an upper section in cast iron, brass or bronze. Each vase has a corresponding decorative tag inspired by the humble horse-brass.

Originally developed for his commission as 08/09 member of the Vauxhall Collective, the work is the starting point for a range of furniture, which explores how to bridge the gap between mass-production and the crafts.
