Cleft Oak & Carbon Steel Side-Cabinet
Developing his interest in obscure crafts techniques, Simon Hasan explores how a crafts technique can be applied to a family of objects suitable for volume production.
The rural craft of wood cleaving is combined with TIG-welded carbon steel, stoneware vases and leather details to make a collection that references heavy rural furniture.
Originally developed for his commission as 08/09 member of the Vauxhall Collective, the work is the starting point for a range of furniture, which explores how to bridge the gap between mass-production and the crafts.
Cleaving is an ancient woodland craft in which locally sourced oak is split along the grain, rather than sawn. This gives character and strength, whilst the shape of the leg follows the shape of the tree from which it came.
This is combined with the industrial craft of TIG-welded carbon steel, and as with wood cleaving, evidence of the manufacturing process is left visible. Weld lines and heat-discolouration give a patina which is usually deemed unfit for mass-produced furniture. These seemingly contradictory crafts are literally tied together by a heavy leather strap.
